Organizers are searching for anyone with information as to whether or not a time capsule exists and if it does, the location of the capsule from the town’s 50th celebration in 1961.
Paul Tate Jr., committee chairman, believes there was a time capsule. Some believe it was buried near the flag pole on the Mamou High School campus, and others believe it was buried at the old town hall building on Main Street. There are some who say they never knew if a time capsule existed. They remember the 1961 celebration was a very large and successful celebration with much fan fair, music and dancing.
Coordinators of the 1961 celebration, Paul Tate Sr., Revon Reed and Burke Guillory, are now deceased so much of the information from the 1961 celebration has been lost or forgotten.
The committee is appealing to any person who has knowledge of the 50th anniversary and the possible capsule, to please contact Tate (336-2686) or Elvin Reed (468-5207.
Anyone wishing to learn more about the Centennial celebration can access the town’s website, BigMamouCentennial.com.
Two events are slated for the celebration - one in January 2011, honoring Jimmy Newman of the Grand Old Opry House in Nashville for his promotion of Big Mamou, and the second event in April of 2011.
Details of this celebration will be forthcoming as the events near.
