The Tangipahoa Parish School Board Tuesday night, April 21 recognized the Amite Kiwanis on their recent donation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to Amite High School.

Kiwanis was represented by Lana Hutchinson, who accepted a certificate from School Superintendent Mark Kolwe and the Board, recognizing the club and their goal of putting AEDs in all local schools.

Hutchinson said the club has purchased two units to date, placing AEDs at Oak Forest and Amite High School, so far. The club's longterm goal is to provide an AED unit at every public school on the north end.

Hutchinson said several corporate sponsors, including the Amite-area pharmacies and First Guaranty Bank, have helped make this project become a reality.

Amite High Principal Mike Stant said six members of his school's staff have trained so far to become certified users of the device, which medical professionals say can help stablize patients until paramedics arrive on the scene.
