A three-year-old boy that the Eunice juvenile officer calls the saddest thing he’s ever seen is in stable condition in an Opelousas hospital, his mother and her boyfriend charged with cruelty.

According to Officer Ronnie Whaley, the child had a broken right arm and two fractures of the left arm.

Additionally, the child had a severely bruised left eye and “numerous, old healing breaks and bruises.”

His mother, Keisha Arvie, 18, of 800 North 3rd is charged with cruelty to a juvenile. Damian Monday, 21, of 742 Richard faces a charge of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

The child was placed in state custody Sunday night. His mother had called police that day to complain about her boy friend beating the child.

Whaley said Wednesday that he had heard of such cases “but I’ve never run into anything like this, and I hope to never see it again.”

“The ambulance crew and people at the hospital told me the same thing,” he said.

Whaley said the mother had not previously called police because she said she was afraid Monday.

Whaley’s initial investigation indicated a presence of narcotics so the Narcotics Division investigated.

Detective Robert Brickley said a search of Monday’s residence yielded a pound of marijuana, crack cocaine and a .380 pistol.

Charges against Monday include possession of Schedule I and II drugs, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, illegal carrying of weapons, possession of drug paraphernalia and probation violation.
