The American tradition of celebrating Father’s Day was the idea of an enterprising daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd. The notion struck her one Sunday in 1910 while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. She wanted a special day to honor her father William Smart. He was a Civil War veteran and was widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. His daughter proposed to city officials in Spokane, Washington, that the first Father’s Day observance should be held on June 5, which was her father’s birthday. The local ministers needed extra time to prepare their sermons for the occasion, so the date was moved to June 19, 1910. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Happy Father’s Day to all dads, step-dads, grandfathers, adopted fathers and god fathers from all of us at Heritage Manor.
