It would be an understatement to say the Ville Platte High basketball teams won the 2010 Evangeline Parish Basketball Tournament. The truth is they dominated the competition and powered their way to another set of parish titles.

The Ville Platte High Lady Bulldogs crushed the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers 96-28 in the girls’ finals.

Ville Platte took a lead in the first quarter by using their press defense. Slowly, they pulled out to a 14-7 lead.

In the second period, the Ville Platte girls went up 35-12 using superior defense and forcing turnovers. When the mid-way point arrived, the game was all but over. However, the Pine Prairie girls were determined to fight hard till the end and they did that.

“We weren’t about to give up,” said Pine Prairie Head Coach Craig Whittington. “I’m very proud of the way the girls continued to work hard. They (VPHS) are very good and you can’t take anything away from them.”

The Lady Bulldogs kept the momentum and rolled to a big-time victory. They scored an amazing 41 points in the final period, led by Breonna O’Conner with 42 points in the game.

Pine Prairie was led by O’Shanna Freeman with a total of eight points in the contest.

The Ville Platte boys were just as dominating as the girls were in their game. The Bulldogs crushed the Basile boys 84-28 in the final Saturday evening.

The Dogs went up 19-6 in the opening period and never looked back. Michael Thomas and company showed their speed and used precision passing to get the lead and the momentum.

In the second frame, Thomas teamed up with Cody Jones and Taylor Scott to help keep the Cats from scoring. Basile was only able to score six more points. The Basile boys found themselves down 38-12 at the half. The momentum was clearly on the side of Ville Platte.

Villle Platte High did not let up in the second half. They put more and more pressure on the boys in red and white. The Bulldogs went on a tear, scoring 21 points and taking a 59-21 lead into the final period.

The fourth block was all Ville Platte as they piled up the points and held Basile to just seven points.

Thomas led all scorers with 19 points in the game for Ville Platte.

Basile’s Matt Pruitt led his team with 12 points.

PPHS 44 MHS 42

The Lady Panthers won a nail biter to advance to the finals. The two teams went back and forth all game before the girls in orange and black won at the buzzer.

Kayren Pickens led the Lady Panthers with 13 points. Raven and Rosalyn Frank each scored 12 points for Mamou.

VPHS 70 PPHS 20

In a game that would later be for the title, Ville Platte took it to the Lady Panthers. Breonna O’Conner scored 18 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Saige Murray led the Pine Prairie girls with six points in the game.

BHS 46 MHS 60

Mamou got by the Lady Bearcats in an early game. The contest was close until the third period got away from Basile. Mamou held onto the momentum and went on to a victory.

Mia Melvin led the Lady Demons with 26 points, while Alexis Miller led the Basile girls with 17 points.

MHS 60 PPHS 58

Mamou edged the PPHS boys with a last-second bucket for a win. Pine Prairie held the momentum for most of the game. Mamou took the lead late in the game to steal the win.

Dominique Austin led the Mamou boys with an amazing 44 points. Edgar Bradley led Pine Prairie with 17 points.



VPHS 70 BHS 42

In a preview of the boy’s final, the Bulldogs dominated the Bearcats for most of this contest. Basile hung in there in the first period, but could not keep up with the speed and pressure the Bulldogs brought to the table.

Cody Jones led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Matt Pruitt was good for 23 points for Basile.

BHS 53 MHS 47

Basile had to eliminate the Mamou boys in order to advance to the final. The Cats got some great shooting from Pruitt who led the team with 19 points. Mamou battled hard but fell just short in the end. They were led by Dominique Austin with 25 points overall.

It was a great tournament and fun to watch. All Evangeline Parish teams should be proud of their accomplishments.
