Firefighters were called to the residence at 111 Hickory Street at 2:02 a.m. Tuesday morning, May 15. Two men were inside the residence when the fire began: Jay Williams and 51-year-old Irving Antoine. Williams managed to escape the blaze and was taken to the hospital, where he was later released. Antoine, who died in the fire, was found in the bedroom of the home.
A total of 19 firefighters responded to the fire with three trucks. District Fire Chief Ted Demourelle said that since the fire resulted in a death, the state fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate. While the exact point of origin of the blaze is undetermined, Demourelle said it appears to have begun in the attic.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 5:07 a.m. Tuesday morning.
